The Evolution of Creativity and The Crud

These past few weeks, I have been working steadily on some beautiful and need-driven projects. But I am in it for the fun too,  so my path took a wide swerve to the weird side. Trust me , that is not too far from my ordinary day, but I DO try to keep my wacky cat in the bag! Packing a science degree, know that I spent many years peeking into the magical world of microbes. They are an insidious [...]

Self-employment and Gonorrhea

You may be asking yourself, what do these two elements have in common? Well, as a self-employed person, I am responsible for finding new work all of the time. No resting on my laurels. (wait, I HAVE laurels??) My workload ebbs and flows with no particular pattern. In between the “ebb” and “flow”, I have to think up new ways to entertain myself and YOU. It is one of my goals in the grand trifecta of goal setting..enlighten, inform and/or [...]

A Daily Lesson

I have been told that I think too much, but somehow, they may be undershooting the issue. Every day, with great intent, I seek to learn something new. That is a good thing. (right?) If you only go on surface appeal, whether it is fruit bred for eye appeal or people taught to look good, then you tend to miss a lot of cool stuff. Life is flawed and, to coin my own term, “woogly”. But it is the wooglienss [...]

Hearts All Around

As I look at my work, I realize the heart shape is  a theme that never goes out of style. I have a series of metal hearts, my “Used and Abused” pieces, that incorporate some unusual elements into the design. They are textured, 3 dimensional, things dangle from some of them, a great, rustic patina has been applied and all of them are stuffed with hand-made Asian paper (love that part!!). PLUS, they each have a story to tell [...]

Second Down, Fourth Quarter

Yes, a tiny homage to my football-lovin’ husband! (he’d be so proud of me, making a football reference!!) But here we are, staring the end of the year right in the face. With an odd start and a slower- than- glacial pace, it finally picked up. Apparently, all I had to do was go find a job outside of Michele-land. (what!!) It did not last, I got busy with art, thankfully. I used to think that my lack of focus [...]

Head First, Into the Gift Guide

Yes, planning for the holidays while the heat ripples off of the  pavement is a daunting task. I am busy thinking cool thoughts for inspiration and have been reading up on submitting product for holiday gift guides. They leave me kind of cold. I pride myself on creating daily as a stream of consciousness, not a production line. That is not conducive to getting the masses to buy your stuff. Really? The masses. Is that my audience? My work has [...]

What Lurks Beneath

Well, I guess today I learned something about myself.  If you know me and my work, then you know I harbor my fair share of  “wacky cat”.  This is my raw glass work from today. I am pretty sure the border is a secret message in color code. (if you “get” it, please let me know, evidently it is a secret from me too!) Bones are an old favorite of mine and science is a re-occurring theme, but apparently I [...]

Living In Layers
11 months ago 0

The beautiful colors in this fused glass wall medallion make up the intricate design of the Mandala motif, meant to engage the viewer. Your eye perceives the entire piece, but is easily drawn to one layer of color or another and moves through the design and back again. Beautiful, yes. Does it speak to you as a viewer, possibly. Notice that each layer has an intimate relationship with the layer before and after it. The pieces all fit together like [...]

Breast is best, a unanimous decision indeed. Who does not love them? This is the prototype for a line of dessert ware that will inspire you to lick the bottom of the bowl. And, hey, there is a raised, tactile nipple too…just for fun! A great man gift? Absolutely! Personally, I think everyone should have a set!

The Mission of A Commission
1 year ago 0

As a Professional Artist, I really enjoy the commission work that comes into my studio. Last week, I was given a task from the Corning Family, formerly of Massachusetts, currently of Florida…a lovely group with whom my family has grown quite friendly. The end product, a beautiful fused glass platter, turned out very well…it incorporated the correct color combination, addressed a theme of community and growth, and came with a brief description and story. Articulating thoughts and ideas into art [...]
